What do college and administrative physicals involve?
College and administrative physicals are a bit different than annual wellness physicals. Rather than providing a broad overview of your general health, these “special purpose” exams are designed to confirm that you are healthy enough to safely participate in a specific activity. Even so, most forms request similar information.
In general, any physical exam will include several key elements. A medical professional will evaluate your health by:
- Discussing your individual and family medical history
- Measuring your vital signs, including body temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate
- Listening (with a stethoscope) to your heart, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract
- Observing (with a special instrument) the interior of your eyes, ears, nose, and throat
- Palpating (touching) key areas of your body to determine the size and shape of certain organs and check for unusual lumps
- Percussing (tapping) on certain areas of your body to test your reflexes
Based on the results of your medical history review, physical exam, or symptoms, your physician may also order a diagnostic test, such as a urinalysis, X-ray, or blood work.
It can sometimes be challenging to get an appointment with a primary care physician or pediatrician, especially during back-to-school season and other busy times. But, the team at South Tampa Immediate Care is always ready to perform college and administrative physicals. We’re available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends, and we never require appointments.
