Coronavirus (COVID-19) Risk Factors—Information for Our Patients in Tampa, FL
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new disease and there is still much to be learned about its risk factors and other characteristics. Based on currently available information, scientists believe certain individuals are more vulnerable to developing serious complications of COVID-19, including adults ages 65 and older and people with heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes. Here are some of the reasons why:
Older Adults & COVID-19
The body’s immune system naturally weakens with age, becoming less effective at fighting off infection and disease. What’s more, older adults are more likely than their younger counterparts to have an underlying health condition that hinders their body’s ability to cope with and recover from illness. Due to age-related degeneration, lung function also gradually declines over time, not only making it more difficult to breathe but also intensifying the effects of respiratory conditions such as COVID-19.
Heart Disease & COVID-19
While the novel coronavirus primarily affects the airways and lungs, the heart has a critical role in delivering oxygen to organs and tissues throughout the body. If the lungs are overtaxed due to COVID-19, the heart will be forced to work harder, and this can increase the risk of heart attack, especially in individuals with heart disease.
Lung Disease & COVID-19
Chronic airway and lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can cause lung damage, inflammation, and/or scarring, all of which can cause breathing problems and set the stage for a more severe COVID-19 infection.
Diabetes & COVID-19
Diabetes type 1 and type 2 both cause an increase in blood sugar (glucose). High blood glucose can create an environment in which viruses such as COVID-19 can thrive. Also, diabetes can increase inflammation and weaken the immune system, making it more difficult for the body to fight off disease.
Take Steps to Protect Yourself
It is important to note that the novel coronavirus can affect anyone, and it has caused severe illness in people with no known risk factors, including young adults and children. Therefore, whether or not you are at increased risk for complications, it is essential to take steps to protect yourself and others from contracting and spreading COVID-19. For instance, everyone is encouraged to stay home as much as possible, wash their hands thoroughly and often, practice social distancing, and wear a cloth face mask in public places.
