Coronavirus (COVID-19) Symptoms & Warning Signs—Information for Our Patients in Tampa, FL
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) affects different people in different ways. In many cases, the symptoms are relatively mild and resolve on their own within a week to 10 days. However, some people develop very serious health issues that may require hospitalization. Here’s what to look for:
Common Warning Signs of COVID-19
Within 2-14 days after exposure to the novel coronavirus, flu-like symptoms may develop, such as:
- Fever and chills
- Persistent coughing
- Shortness of breath
Some people also experience:
- Muscle pain
- Headache
- Nasal congestion
- Sore throat
- A loss of taste or smell
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
Who Is at Risk for Complications?
Based on currently available information, individuals who may have an elevated risk of developing serious complications of COVID-19 include:
- Adults ages 65 and older
- Residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities
- Anyone who has a compromised immune system
- Anyone who has a serious underlying medical condition, such as heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes
It is especially important for high-risk individuals to be watchful for COVID-19 symptoms and to seek prompt medical attention when appropriate.
Who Should Be Tested?
At this time, a lab test such as a nasopharyngeal swab is the only way to confirm a diagnosis of COVID-19. However, there is currently a limited number of certified testing centers available, and as of yet, there is no FDA-approved treatment for the novel coronavirus.
For these reasons, COVID-19 testing will likely be of limited value if you have mild symptoms and are at average risk of developing complications. Instead, the best course of action is to isolate yourself. This means staying home and staying away from others (including your family) as much as possible. Ideally, you should use a separate bedroom and bathroom, if available, and practice social distancing by maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet between yourself and other people at all times.
In addition to isolating yourself, if you have moderate to severe symptoms and/or you are at high risk of developing complications, you should promptly consult with a medical professional, who may advise you to have a COVID-19 test. If you experience potentially life-threatening symptoms at any time, such as difficulty breathing or chest pain, you should call 911 or go directly to the nearest hospital emergency room.
