All patients must see our physician before receiving COVID-19 (Coronavirus) PCR testing.
COVID-19-related visits include a physician evaluation and a PCR test, which is the most accurate test available. The PCR test is billed to your insurance by the outside lab and results are typically available in 2-4 days.
A Quidel Rapid Antigen COVID-19 test (results in 15 minutes) may be added on the same day as a physician visit for a cash-pay price of $75.
The Rapid Antigen cash-pay price for asymptomatic patients who are uninsured or need testing for travel or employment is $100.
There is a $25 cash-pay price for the blood draw for an Antibody Test. Check with your insurance provider to see if they will cover the lab cost.
What Happens During the COVID-19 Test?
Right now, the only way to confirm an active COVID-19 infection is to receive a specialized diagnostic test administered by a medical professional. Because the novel coronavirus 2019 is a brand-new virus, there are still many unknowns surrounding it, and some people are understandably apprehensive about the COVID-19 test procedure. A commonly asked question is “does the COVID-19 test hurt?” Actually, coronavirus testing is not much different than flu testing. Both involve the collection of a nasal or throat secretion specimen, which is then tested in a lab for evidence of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
Here’s What to Expect During Your Nasal Swab Test
To collect your specimen, a provider will ask you to tilt your head slightly back, then he or she will insert a special swab (a long stick with a small, soft brush at one end) into one of your nostrils. After twirling the swab a few times to help ensure the collection of an adequate sample, the provider will remove the swab from your nostril, place it in a labeled vial, and possibly repeat the process in your other nostril.
To help ensure an accurate test result, the provider must collect a sufficient sample of cells and fluids from your nasopharynx—the passageway between your nose and throat. Because your body is unaccustomed to having an object inserted in that area, you may experience some unfamiliar sensations during your COVID-19 test. For instance, if the test is performed correctly, it may cause your eyes to water. It can also trigger coughing, sneezing, and gagging. Of course, individual tolerances for discomfort can vary widely, but most people describe the test as uncomfortable but not excruciating. In any case, you can take comfort in knowing that it should all be over in less than a minute.
