What is Gout?
A common form of inflammatory arthritis, gout is caused by an accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. Uric acid is produced by the body to break down purines, which are substances found naturally in human cells as well as in certain protein-rich foods, such as steak and seafood. Normally, this metabolic byproduct travels through the bloodstream to the kidneys and then is flushed out of the body with the urine. However, gout can occur if the body overproduces uric acid or the kidneys do not process it efficiently. Anyone can develop the condition; individual risk is influenced by age, hypertension, obesity, hormone therapy, surgery, and trauma.
In many cases, the first symptom of gout is sudden, excruciating pain and swelling in the joint at the base of a big toe or another low-body joint, such as a knee or ankle. An attack might take place in the middle of the night, disrupting sleep with a burning sensation that is so intense even the weight of a bed sheet on the affected joint may be intolerable.
Usually, gout affects one joint at a time. However, if left untreated, the condition can progress to multiple joints and lead to other problems, such as kidney stones and tophi (lumps of crystalized uric acid that form under the skin around joints). Because gout is also associated with serious health risks like high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease, it’s important to seek medical attention if you experience sudden, intense joint pain.
A physician can prescribe medications for treating a gout attack. Other ways to manage the associated pain and swelling include:
- Applying an ice pack and elevating the affected joint
- Drinking water and plenty of fluids (but avoiding alcoholic and sugary beverages)
- Asking for help with everyday tasks
- Trying to relax
