What Is Herpes?
Herpes is a common infection that affects the skin and mucous membranes. There two main types – oral herpes and genital herpes – both of which are caused strains of the same virus (herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2)). While both types of herpes are often asymptomatic, oral herpes can cause outbreaks of cold sores or fever blisters on the lips and around the mouth, and genital herpes can cause outbreaks of sores or lesions on the genitals, anus, and upper thighs.
After an initial herpes infection, the virus lies dormant in the body for many years. Some people never experience symptom outbreaks and remain completely unaware that they carry HSV-1 or HSV-2 (or both). Even so, the virus can still be spread. Herpes infects cells, which naturally shed. After shedding, an infected cell can be passed to another person.
How to reduce the chance of spreading herpes
Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 are mainly transmitted skin-to-skin contact, which often happens during sexual intimacy, but can also occur during nonsexual touching or kissing. Herpes is most contagious during an outbreak, but it’s also possible to spread the virus when no symptoms are present. Therefore, in between symptom outbreaks, it is important to use a condom during sexual activity in order to reduce the likelihood of spreading the infection.
It is also essential to refrain from having sexual contact as soon as any warning signs of a symptom outbreak appear. The most common warning signs are burning, itching, and tingling sensations around the genitals or mouth. To avoid spreading the virus, it is important to avoid vaginal, oral, and anal sex — even with a condom — until at least seven days after the warning signs stop or the sores heal.
How to reduce the likelihood of symptom outbreaks
Consuming a nutritious diet, getting enough sleep, avoiding sunburn, and managing stress are all positive lifestyle practices that can be helpful for preventing herpes symptom flare-ups, as well as promoting overall health and wellness. Also, getting tested and knowing your status can help keep you healthy and protect others.
